The second hull for the KNUD RASMUSSEN Class of arctic patrol vessels has arrived at Karstensens Skibsværft A/S in Skagen as a grey painted empty hull for fit out.

In connection with the naming ceremony for KNUD RASMUSSEN, the first of the 2 new arctic patrol vessels, there were lots of humorous comments of the fact that the subject of the naming was “primer red” and not navy gray.

But that is probably not the reason why the second in class was in proper navy grey on arrival in Skagen.

In the floating dock

KNUD RASMUSSEN now occupies the shipyards floating dock, and it is expected that it during the autumn will be dressed in standard navy grey.

The new arctic patrol ship will be the second in a series planned to reach 3, sometime after 2010, which will be known as the KNUD RASMUSSEN Class.

With the selection of the name KNUD RASMUSSEN it seems only natural to assume that the next 2 ships will have names of Danish arctic scientists/explorers.

A lot of guessing has been done – but we will have to wait for this till the spring of 2008.

Danish Polish cooperation

The second arctic patrol ship was launched as planned on July 1st. Followed by the installation of stern shaft, gear main engines, auxiliary machinery and superstructure by Stocznia Pólnocna (Northern Shipyard) in Gdansk.

Whereupon the finished hull was towed to Skagen.

Installation of military equipment, command and communication equipment etc. will, as on the sister ship, be performed by the RDN at one of the naval stations before final acceptance into service in the spring of 2008.

Number two in the class is expected to be accepted fully operative at the end of 2008.
